Project Phases 1

Phase 1: Observe, survey and analyse

Do some theoretical research on the topics of sustainability (as described before) and mobility. Try to take the taiwanese perspective.
Go out on the streets, to the people, to the places – where mobility happens. Observe urban life, observe business processes and private life. Observe people in motion.
Find products that support, enable or change the way of mobility!
Look out for problems between old and young, those who have and those who don´t have etc. Observe how people deal with processes, products, services and systems in a way that may have not been intended when designing the system. We want to learn from the way people use and behave.
Make a lot of photos, make a short description for every photo you take. Choose the seven most important photos that have the potential to proceed working on: the topics should have a strong meaning for taiwanese citizens as we want to work on a taiwanese way of dealing with the challenges of mobility.
For the even most important ones, describe its characteristics from various points of view, the history of the product that enables or deals with mobility, such as a script between the people involved in, the stakeholders, describe the context, environmental issues etc.
Speak to people involved, make a short interview – ask for reasons – take nothing for granted when talking to the people!
Bring all the photos to our first meeting on Monday, try to proceed as far as possible with the 7 most important ones – we will discuss about that, pick out the most important directions and you will have the chance to proceed on that only on Tuesday. So the more material you bring, the better.

Phase 2: Conceptualize, create and design
After a very open first phase, here we will focus extremely. Thoughts and spects will converge. You will suggest the two most interesting products/concepts/situations you have found and pick them out.
Define new conditions (e.g. environmental) and compare it with the old situations. Illustrate the desirable relationship between new stakeholders. Modify all the elements you found and re-integrate into a structure so that it would make new values in the society.
Develop a concept that will exaggerate your intentions and concepts, this might also be ironic! Emphasize the meaning for the stakeholders. Do this regardless of any economical, practical or technological ability for realization. Use the power of design to show directions for innovations.
Think not only of products, but of services and systems. Then design a suggestion for a simple product being the interface for a service or system (so that people can understand what you mean).
Develop one of the concepts in a way it might be realized.

Phase 3: Communicate and argue
Show the variety of cultural contexts and solutions they would have at their premises with designed products (and services or systems) and make it clear that the result of the design is supporting your insights in sustainability.
Create a presentation for a 5-minute speech about „Mobility 2020 in Taiwan – a blueprint for…? (this might be Asia, the World, economic growth, the integration of the elderly – whatever your concept aims at). Try to be as convincing as possible. You can choose from the topics you developed in phase 2.
